Located 70 km to the northeast of Moscow and on the route of the Golden Ring of Russia, Sergiev Posad (formerly known as Zagorsk) is one of the most important centres of the Orthodox religion. There you will see the characteristic elements of military architecture of the XV-XVIII centuries, the period of its development. Now the operating fortress and monastery of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius, it is also home to the Seminary, the Technological Institute, the Pilgrimage Centre, and so-called “Russian Vatican” the centre and residence of His Holiness the Patriarch of All Russia. Among its numerous churches and cathedrals, the most notable and important is the Cathedral of the Assumption with its blue domes. The grave of Boris Godunov and his family and the well-known painting “Trinity” by Andrew Rublev are housed there. Sergiev Posad has also been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
